Daryl Granger’s “Netting the Waters” Sheds Light on Lake Erie’s Fishing Industry

Norfolk’s own Daryl Granger’s debut documentary, “Netting the Waters,” has captivated audiences with its in-depth exploration of commercial fishing on Lake Erie’s North Shore. This two-hour film, shot entirely by Granger himself, delves into the lives of fishermen who brave the unpredictable waters to catch smelt, pickerel, and perch.

Using a combination of drones, handheld, and mounted cameras, along with stunning underwater footage, Granger offers viewers a cinematic journey that highlights the intricate processes involved in commercial fishing. The documentary showcases the dramatic contrasts between sudden storms and tranquil waters, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Lake Erie.

“Netting the Waters” features the stories of two seasoned captains, George Gibbons and Joe Zimba, who share their experiences and challenges of life on the lake. The film not only captures the technical aspects of fishing but also the emotional and personal connections these fishermen have with their craft.

Since its release, “Netting the Waters” has garnered significant acclaim, with over 45 sold-out screenings at 9 theatres in Southern Ontario already. Audiences have been engaged and informed, leaving with a newfound appreciation for the fishermen and women of Lake Erie’s North Shore.

Among the list of accolades, the film has already received multiple awards including Best Educational Film by the World Film Festival in Cannes, Best Feature Documentary at the Toronto Film and Script Awards, and the Award of Merit for a Documentary Feature by the IndieFEST Film Awards. These awards further cement the impact and reach of the film.

Granger, who hails from Simcoe, Ontario, and operates RoseLe Studio, has poured his multifaceted talents into this project. He handled everything from cinematography and creation to writing, editing, and voiceover work. His dedication and passion for storytelling are evident in every frame, making “Netting the Waters” a must-watch for anyone interested in the realities of commercial fishing and the beauty of Lake Erie.
